78rpm Record Series

During the 78rpm era, record labels often issued single or multiple records as part of a series. These series were often named to reflect the type and style of music offered on the discs. For example, during the 1930’s, English Parlophone offered over 700 records as part of an on-going and ever changing series reflecting jazz and swing music. Over a period of twenty years or so, this series changed and re-branded as Parlophone’s, ‘New ‘Rhythm-Style’ Series’ and the ‘1941 Super ‘Rhythm-Style’ Series’, to name, just two…

Some labels were also involved in issuing ‘society’ series which were often member-subscription based. These ‘society’ series were formed with the specific purpose of recording music which was often outside the repertoire of ‘standard’ music or when demand for such music made it economically imprudent to record without first having established a subscription base for it. ‘His Master’s Voice’ produced many different society record series of particular composers and genres. [See below…]

The first Society was formed in September 1931 for the recording of Hugo Wolf’s songs, and the response to that venture was such that Societies for recording all Beethoven’s Pianoforte Sonatas, the best of Haydn’s String Quartets, of the music of Sibelius, were formed. Since then, other societies were added to that number; and working on the same basic principle of limited editions of certain works, not in themselves calling for the establishment of a special society, were published.

At the time, each society depended on its ability to carry out its programme with the support of paying subscribers.

The rules of the societies were at the time:—
(1) There was no entrance fee.
(2) The subscription for each volume had to be paid in advance.
(3) Records were available only to members.
(4) No records could be purchased separately. Should a member break or otherwise damage a record he/she had to return the damaged record when applying for a replacement.
(5) The records were to be delivered either direct to the subscriber or dealer with whom they enrolled.
(6) The records and albums were to be packed and delivered free of charge to any address in Great Britain but postage and custom charges abroad were borne by the customer.
